Nesting 101 - Staying Focus and Inspired While You Stay at Home
As the reality of the current health crisis starts to affect every aspect of our lives, I am reminded of the feeling that I had when my first child was born. I had the sudden urge to set things in order in my home - otherwise known as “nesting.”
My husband John and I were skiing in Switzerland when the European travel ban was announced, and we were fortunate that our daughter called us at 2AM (yes, she is all grown up now!) to let us know we needed to change our plans. When we arrived back home on Friday afternoon, and I immediately felt that nesting urge again.
Windows were washed (all 34 of them). Floors were scrubbed. Laundry was folded. Suitcases put away. Three days later, I finally felt in control of the situation and a strange calm came over me. My house was in order.
As these next few weeks of uncertainty approach, I am sure I will be constantly looking for ways to tidy up and stay organized. When there are so many factors in our lives, beyond social distancing, that seem out of our control, I suggest taking the time to do two things.
First and foremost, pray. I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes; “You can’t trust God AND worry at the same time.”
Second. Prepare your nest. Take this time to clean, organize and set your house in order. Sure, it would be easier to sit on the sofa and binge-watch Netflix or stress yourself out with news and social media. But instead, I suggest you take this time to clean out closets, go through all the old family photos you’ve been meaning to catalog forever, and other like-minded tasks. Often clarity and and a sense of peace come when we organize and de-clutter our lives.
We may all be spending the next few weeks practicing safe social distancing, but when we emerge - and we will emerge - you will feel lighter and better for your efforts if you have spent your time nesting and getting your house in order.
These two things you can control, prayer and nesting. Let God take care of the rest.
