Wall Scones: Why They Work

Wall Sconces – A simple solution for adding lighting to any space!

As a professional interior designer I need to consider many different aspects of my clients’ interiors, but my first focus might surprise you - it’s Lighting. I feel that a good lighting plan is paramount to great interior design. And a good lighting plan that revolves around layered and varied lighting sources is even better! That’s why I like to include wall sconces in many of my client’s lighting plan.

As with every genre of lighting fixture, wall sconce design has come a long way over the past 10 years. There are myriad styles and capabilities offered with current sconce designs. Here are a few things to think about when you are considering incorporating wall sconces into your interior design:

1.      What is the desired function of the wall sconce? Is it a reading/task light or hallway illumination?

2.      Do you want the wall sconce to be part of the design aesthetic OR simply to give you more light?

3.      Do you need an adjustable fixture or can it be a stationary fixture? And does the location require an ADA compatible fixture with a low-profile?

4.      Whenever possible, try to pick your wall sconce design BEFORE you place your furniture OR determine the height of your junction box.

5.      What are the feasibility of wiring and electrifying your wall sconce? And how do you want to control it – on the fixture itself or a wall switch?

I believe wall sconces are often the missing link that completes a good lighting plan. Whether illuminating a hallway or adding task lighting at your bedside consider an old standard with a new direction can be the perfect solution!
