Outdoor Shade Options

Not everyone wants to soak up the sun! Having shade options for your guests or yourself is important for any perfectly designed outdoor space AND might just save the day when you are entertaining, especially if your sun shade option protects your guests from rain, too!  Below I have put together some creative options when you want to keep the sun away for a day! Some may seem extravagant, but why not. If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors you want it to be perfect.

●      Umbrellas – come in all shapes and sizes. They normally have extended arms and are movable as the sun moves throughout the day you can move the umbrella to suit your needs. Whether connected to your table, stand-alone, or my favorite- space-savers – wall-mounted styles, umbrellas not only offer shade but COLOR, too!

●      Screening - Adjustable screens are inexpensive and easy to install. These are a good option when you don’t want to spend the money on those expensive retractable awnings. Screens will keep the sun and those pesky bugs out. Durability is key for whatever your long-term goal is – so do your research. We don’t have a screen door for our back entrance, so when we are entertaining I simply install a temporary split screen with velcro. It works perfect for easing traffic flow, although our pooch, Bailey is afraid of it – go figure!

●      Pergola - A favorite for many, pergolas keep it shady without keeping the sun out completely. Available with or without screens they offer sturdy rain protection, too. But make sure you have carefully planned your furniture layout in any pergola, especially if you plan on adding a dining table.

●      Vine Lattice - A beautiful option to stay in the shade especially if you like hanging vines and flowers. A word of caution as you will have to deal with insects and birds depending on the planting you choose –so choose wisely!

●      Outdoor curtains - A wonderful little option to keep the sun away, this option is great for when the sun is coming up and going down. Those pesky times where the sun isn’t directly over top of you but can still be a nuisance.

Whatever you decide keep a few things in mind:

●      Ongoing maintenance, what will it take?

●      Cleaning, some options are easy and sound great but can be difficult to keep clean.

●      Keep in mind how you use your space. Where do people hang out? Make sure you pay attention to what areas are being used, or not used. How you can improve for next time!

●      Safety. Some DIY online options may not be the safest. Keep in mind any open fires (fire pits, tiki lights, etc.) can be hazardous or may not be permitted within certain townships or city limits. Be safe!
