WALK THIS WAY – Exploring an Historic Neighborhood

Living in an historic neighborhood changes your life in many way. But perhaps the most obvious aspect of that change is how much we walk. We walk to restaurants, we walk to visit with neighbors, and I can even walk to clients’ houses. (Although lugging around samples can make this a challenge!) But the most common walk we take – every day – sometimes multiple times a day – is to walk our Golden-Doodle, Bailey. Yes, often these walks feel rushed like when I have a busy day or I’m late for a meeting. However sometimes, every so often, I have the time – or should I say - take the time, to bring my camera along to document this beautiful neighborhood we live in.

Of course, Bailey’s perspective is different from mine and I don’t know who stops more, Bailey or me.  I stop to take pictures of a myriad of amazing things that catch my photographic eye when I actually stop to take the time. Bailey stops to sniff- well it feels like EVERY tree along our route. Even though we can’t understand each other’s choice we are patient with one another and just enjoy the time we take to stop and “smell the crocuses.”

Whether it’s a row of 100-year-old elms, patterned and painted brick pavers, or a shaded porch my neighborhood is a treasure trove of details. Right now I am fascinated with basement window metal grates. Underneath the 10+ layers of paint, rust and grime you can find some amazing details! It seems I can find something new each time I look at a historic building. Each property – has a ton of amazing details ranging from a hand-carved corbel to a home-made wood awning bracket. It doesn’t matter if they are ornate or simple they are all beautiful to me!

This time of year I feel like people are starting to come out of hibernation, so I am not the only one strolling and taking pictures. However I think I am the only one who has a 65lb Doodle as their photographer’s assistant!
